Why Organic Beauty?
For an instant understanding of why you and your loved ones need to use organic personal care products, watch this excellent animated 8 minute overview of the problems with cosmetics in America today. Highly recommended.
In order to keep the body’s internal environment healthy and vital, all of our skins need to function properly. That is, our first skin the organ, our second skin which is our clothing and our third skin which in Bau-Biologie is the buildings that envelop us. Remember that our first skin has many functions besides holding us together. One of these is to unload some 2 to 2.5 pounds of metabolic waste per day. It can’t do its job when it is sealed in mineral oils, plasticizers, dyes, fragrances and other chemicals.
As you might know, some pharmaceuticals are now being delivered transdermally via band-aid-like patches that are worn all day long. That is to say that it is a well known fact that the skin absorbs just about everything applied to it and that what the skin absorbs circulates throughout the body. This means that all the chemicals in your personal care products are absorbed and metabolized by the body. These products add to the body’s total toxic burden making it work harder. With time the body gets over-burdened with poisons it was never designed to breakdown. It then simply stores them in joints, blood vessels, organs, nerves, glands and the brain where they eventually cause a plethora of ills and aches. Makes you think again before you reach for the hairspray or Vaseline Intensive Care, doesn’t it?
As it is hard to imagine slurping down a teaspoon of formaldehyde or a mouthful of PEG -80, it should likewise be difficult to slather the body in a film of parabens and bisphenol A. Cosmetic manufacturers are tricky though and disguise their poisonous products with more synthetic chemicals the likes of fragrances and replicates of human pheromones. Don't be taken in, though. Unless ‘certified organic’ is prominently displayed on the product, the words are all fluff and deception. Outside-In-Skin products are sourced from nature and cleanse and nourish the body using organic aromatic oils, clays, salts, essential oils, herbal tinctures, edible oils and pure water. Everyone needs personal care products free of harmful synthetic ingredients and petrochemical derivatives. Outside-In-Skin is the answer
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is it so important to use organic personal care products?
Women who use makeup daily absorb, on average, 5 pounds each year. According to the Environmental Working Group, 99% of the ingredients in the 10,500 products currently available contain one or more ingredients that have never been evaluated for safety.
Why do so many skin care products contain hazardous ingredients?
Because they're cheap, readily available, and easy to dilute. The FDA does NOT regulate the $50 billion per year industry. It is self-regulated and self-policed. Remember profit is the motive.
Why is the skin so susceptible to toxins?
The skin is the body’s largest organ. It is 1/10th thick and is infiltrated with a vast network of minute blood vessels that provide instant access to the body’s interior environment. Ergo, applying product to your skin is like eating. It all goes systemic. Remember, skin patches are now used to deliver all variety of pharmaceuticals.
But it’s just lotion. Are you perhaps exaggerating?
I wish. Consider the following:
- Total body burden
- The ‘chemical soup’ (which is an accurate description of modern man’s bodily water content) results in the many chemicals in the body interacting in unknown and unpredictable ways
- Escalating rates of cancers, endocrine disruption, respiratory and mental problems, autoimmune and neurological disorders and declining health of the American population
- More than 1000 of the ingredients in personal care products in the United States are banned in the EEU.
- $2 billion per year is expended in advertising by the industry to convince you their products work - in spite of your rapidly aging skin.
- Their self-regulating rules provide ample loop holes including:
- Lax labeling (you cannot trust that what is on the label is all that is in the product
- For Professional Use Only - allows the industry to not list known hazardous chemicals in products
- Hypo-allergenic (no actual testing required)
- Even though you may not be able to determine causal relationships between a particular chemical and a disorder doesn’t mean that there is not a contributing factor relationship
- What you can’t identify CAN hurt you
- What you don’t know CAN hurt you
Solution: Only put on your skin that which you can eat.
Though beauty is more than skin deep and I strongly believe that beauty works from the inside out, The Healing Atelier’s Organic Beauty products actually work from the outside in. Pampering your skin with ‘beauty’ products laced with toxins is passé. The time has come to feed your skin organics just as you feed your body organic food.
Poisons to Avoid
Since there is no government regulation of personal care products. It is our business as consumers to become educated about the contents of what we put in and on our bodies. For a list of toxic ingredients commonly added to personal care products, please contact Environmental Working Group. EWG is a non-profit organization working to inform, educate and reform in the field of consumer goods and health and safety. Their Skin Deep database and scientific papers and research reports provide a valuable resource for the latest information on consumer products and your health.
